As this revered old reporter mounted the steps of the Roger Sherman Inn prepared to pay homage one last time to his noble leader he was overcome with a wave of nostalgia for the past year under her wise and judicious hand.  A tear appeared, only to be quickly swept away before any of the faithful could assess the depth of feeling in one so old, hardened and cynical.  Indeed a milestone has been passed with the end of term of the first woman president of the Rotary Club of New Canaan.  That she is passing the torch to the second is of little note.  Nancy has blazed the trail, broken through the glass ceiling, and tamed the rabid Rucci.  While in the future observers may find it difficult to discern whether she is sitting or standing, her legacy will never be in question.  She’s done it!  A tip of the hat to President Nancy Robinson as her sun sets slowly in the west.

 

The aforementioned lady called the meeting to order and requested a blessing from an adopted son of West By God Virginia who fell into the vernacular of that fine state as his prayer wound down.

 

President-elect Amy brought husband Bruce to lunch so that they could make a quick escape to the District Conference in Saratoga.  Nancy reported that she entreated husband Ron to join her as well, but he apparently declined on the basis that it was entirely possible that Kevin McLaughlin would be present and might try to assault him yet again.  One hopes that Nancy and Ron were re-joined in time to accompany Amy and Bruce.

 

Today’s guests included the very attractive Gene Tonkavich, and from the Bank of New Canaan Bob Cocks and Patrick Hoey.  Accompanying guest speaker Congressman Chris Shays were Staff Assistant Victoria Rosa and Intern Kelly Nallen.  Also in attendance were Chase Dipanni and the elusive Spider Sovich.

 

Phil McLain reported that dictionaries have been distributed by various Rotarians to all NC public school third graders, whereupon Art Duell related that Jack Pugliese had received 30 thank you notes from the students he handled.  This made Phil feel bad as no one has thanked him.

 

President Nancy congratulated David Bryant on his Oscar worthy turn last week as the Allocations Impressario.  Gentle Ben Bilus then brushed Nancy aside, seized the floor and spoke about acting as a tour guide for a Rotary International Group Study team from Sri Lanka.  It appears that he took them to Stew Leonard’s.  One can only imagine the effect of this visit on the economy of the former Ceylon.

 

Ken Campbell checked another chore off his honey do list when he distributed his wife’s Chamber of Commerce raffle tickets to the hapless masses.  As Steve Risbridger says, You’ve got to love the Chamber!”

 

Hunter S. then rose and gave a troubling introduction to his Darien High School classmate Congressman Christopher Shays.  While Chris pretty much talked about a number of issues like the war in Iraq, immigration and the FAA, his main thrust seemed to be to yell at poor John Engle.  While it is always good to have Chris in our midst, this revered old correspondent felt for John on this day.
