Fred and Eric did their things and the small group assembled on a warm...April 10, 2014

New Canaan Rotary Club Bulletin                                          April 10, 2014

Fred and Eric did their things and the small group assembled on a warm and sunny  day at the Roger queued up for the buffet.  Before the line petered out a few more members had straggled in and four tables were populated by animated and smiling Rotarians.  There were no Visiting Rotarians or guests.

Merriam Webster Simpson announced dictionary delivery dates and times as follows:  New Canaan Country School April 11 [tomorrow] at 9:30 AM; West School April 28 at 9:30 AM; South School April 29 at 2:00 PM; East School TBD; St. A's TBD.  Anyone, particularly those who have not previously participated, who wish to help Keith should check in with him at keithesimpson@hotmail [note the "e"] or 203-966-7071.

Following up his excellent email on the subject, Brock reminded everyone of the May 8 Golf Tournament at CCNC at noon and the raffle/cocktail party to follow.  He believes that the Stamford presence will be somewhat diminished this year and so, encouraged additional participation by our Club.  Wilton is sending a representative foursome in an attempt to create a diplomatic presence strong enough to forestall a Crimea-like annexation by New Canaan.  Speaker Craig Panzano rose and committed to providing a YMCA year's family membership, a swim package and a personal training package to Carolyn for the raffle.  Pretty generous.  Carolyn now needs actual members to step up and help her with prizes, contacts. etc.

Fred reminded us once again that the combined District Conference and Assembly will be held May 2, 3 and 4 in Mystic and again requested prize donations for that event.  The East School book initiative mentioned last week by John Bemis is being worked on  by a collar-less Leo.  More to come.  Fred warned the audience that he will miss the meeting three weeks from today and a preview of Eric's year will be on display.  Forewarned is forearmed.  In spite of having published the Clean Your Mile meeting spot as the NCHS parking lot in each of the past four bulletins without correction, Fred today alleged that the group will assemble in the Saxe parking lot at 9:00 on Saturday, April 26.  Fred reported that Kevin Nascimiento's Peace and Conflict Resolution Scholarship application has been forwarded on with his enthusiastic endorsement.

Bill Walbert, former head of the Gridiron Club and Town Players, did his thespian credentials no favors as he rose and stumbled through a computer story.  He did however collect fines in honor of the collegiate basketball capital of the world Husky Country, Eric's distant observation of the Pope on the Pontiff's home turf, Bill's hope that his son's poor downtrodden protestant Union College hockey team would prevail over John Burns' entitled large enrollment Catholic juggernaut in the upcoming Frozen Four hockey tourney, Leo's relief at being collar-free for the first time in 13 weeks, and John K's apochryphal baseball story.  And Fred reminded the females and males in the room that the Gridiron Club Fall Guy dinner and performance for the women will occur on April 23 and the men two nights later on the 25th.

Ken then introduced New Canaan YMCA Executive Director Craig Panzano who gave an extremely enlightening presentation illustrating the proposed construction project at the South Avenue facility.  While transforming the layout of the existing internal space it will add approximately four percent to the footprint.  The Y is a tremendous community asset whose mission is to provide healthy living, youth development and social responsibility.  It has done all three exceptionally well over the years and believes the proposed $22,000,000 project will position it to do even better in the future.  Very exciting plans with incalculable benefits to its 11,000 members.  Still some regulatory hurdles to overcome, but he is hopeful that approval will be granted and construction can proceed.
