Week Five of the Nancy Watch 7/27/06

ROTARY CLUB OF NEW CANAAN

BULLETIN FOR JULY 27, 2006

Week five of the Nancy Watch found us craning our necks…no Nancy to watch! So on this hot summer day, we had a preview of President Amy (2007/08). With great precision and a confident voice our (future) leader asked Ad for a prayer. Always in tune to the times and pop culture, our favorite accountant for the stars, came through with a reference to Modonna and her private moments. Madonna may not be on God’s favorite list but Ad is driven by the topical as he calls upon the Lord to bless our Club and strays from the larger world. Then we settled into a full house, a noisy, high energy luncheon with wonderful flavors, wiz bang topics at every table, and great expectations for Amy at the lectern. Well, she didn’t use the lectern, choosing instead to simply stand with the people, us. That’s leadership, that’s populism, that’s America at its very best. Hillary could not have done it better! (Of course there are nitpickers in every crowd. One of our well known and much beloved members heckled a bit, suggesting that our Amy started the meeting a little late. Horsefeathers! The whole darn thing went off pretty well.)

Guests:

Laura Rubenfeld, New Canaan Board of Realtors

Christina Ross

John and Marty Bradshaw from the Rotary Club of Mystic (Mystic chose to change its Lobsterfest after pressure from Red Lobster.) John gave details about their Club’s fundraiser: It is held at Mystic Seaport so ticketholders must also pay for entry to the Seaport. Profits run from $11K to $22K, with weather the key factor in success. It is held Memorial Day Weekend, Saturday – Monday. The Mystic Club donates its unsold hot dogs, buns, etc. to local soup kitchens. John was a most welcome guest!

Club Announcements:

Past President Frank, still pining for Kenya, reported that he’d heard from the Pope, Derrick Pope that is. Frank was wearing a tee shirt in a brilliant, safety yellow with “Baad Ya Kazi” written across the back. Baad Ya Kazi is a Kenyan saying, “Litter is Bad.” In synch with that thought, Ambassafor Frank gave us a New Canaan Rotary garbage can report. It’s all good, the townsfolk of zip code 06840 can stop clutching their gum wrappers and old lottery tickets and start tossing them into beautiful new or reconditioned receptacles by 2008. Connecting garbage cans here with life in Kenya seems a stretch but remember, we began with a prayer that included Madonna so our crowd caught on to stretching pretty quickly on this steamy Thursday.

Program:

Nancy Belon, as organized as ever, introduced Julius Alexander who heads PCLinkZ.com. Julius is a New Canaan resident who knows his gigabytes and applications. A snappy punchlist of recommendations led Julius’ talk: battery backups, surge protection, data safe on a second hard drive, anti-virus protection, scanning, and digital video security. PCLinkZ.com also has a simple repair/support service: $100 guaranteed fix, no fix, no cost. PCLinkZ.com also gathers old PC’s, monitors, keyboards, etc., reconditions them and gives them to schools. A very good, informative program from a knowledgeable and clear communicator.

Respectfully submitted,

John Maine
