Passing of former member Walter Barnes

Subject: RE: Passing of former member Walter Barnes

I’m not sure if word has spread, but I just learned that our former member, Walter Barnes, passed away.  Walter ‘Charming’ Barnes was one of our most colorful members who always had a smile and a story….. and even if you had heard one of his stories before, each time was like hearing it for the first time as he frequently embellished small details.  It was a pleasure having known Walt; he was a true gentleman.  His obituary was just posted on the NC Advertiser website…..

Obituary: Walter C. Barnes, 85, owner of New Canaan Moving & Storage

Walter C. Barnes, 85 of East Sandwich, Mass., passed away peacefully at Cape Heritage Rehabilitation Facility on Wednesday, Feb. 19.

Walter was the son of Walter Pennoyer Barnes and Edith Channing Barnes and was born and raised in New Canaan, where he spent most of his adult life. Walter was active in many things throughout his life in New Canaan, including the New Canaan Firehouse, the Masonic Lodge, and the Rotary Club to name a few. He was a tractor trailer driver throughout his life; he owned New Canaan Moving and Storage for over 35 years and was a fixture in the community for over 50 years.

An avid fisherman, Walter loved to fish the waters of Long Island Sound, Cape Cod Bay and the Atlantic Ocean. In retirement, Walt’s passion was building, repairing and restoring fishing rods. He was a devoted member of Rod Crafters organization and will be missed by his many friends there. Walter also enjoyed reading about the Civil War and impressed many with his knowledge of historical facts about battles, campaigns and key leaders during this time.

In the 1990s, Walt moved to East Sandwich, Mass., to more fully enjoy his passion for fishing and boating. Walt loved the water and when age forced him to sell his 19 foot Aquasport fishing boat, “Little Annie,” he would continue to go down to the canal to watch the boats and “check the water.” Truly the love of his life was the sea and a close 2nd was his girlfriend of many years, Ruby Ball, who predeceased him in January 2011.

He is survived by his four children, Walter A. Barnes of North Brunswick, N.J., Carey Nevin of Ridgefield, Robert Channing Barnes of Enfield and Peggy Paglia of Mashpee, Mass. He is also survived by 11 grandchildren.
